DS Smith, a company within International Paper, is investing over €14 million in its Romanian packaging plants in Timișoara and Ghimbav, according to its own statements. The measures aim to modernise production processes, expand capacity, and drive the development of new packaging solutions.

DS Smith has announced it will invest approximately €10.5 million in its Timișoara site by the first quarter of 2027. Plans include the automation of production processes, restructuring of the production flow, and expansion of the finished goods warehouse. Additionally, a new production line will be installed in the converting area. According to the company, this will enable the manufacturing of new packaging types and reduce delivery times.

„2025 was a special year, in which we achieved strong volume growth for the second year in a row, which makes me particularly pleased. DS Smith Packaging has set ambitious goals for 2026 in Romania. We continue to invest in our sites despite the challenging economic environment, precisely because we understand our customers“ needs and are taking concrete measures to meet them.“

Further investments planned in Ghimbav

In parallel, the Ghimbav site is set to receive a further €3.6 million in 2026 for the modernisation of its infrastructure and corrugated board facilities. The company points to an investment programme worth €13 million at this site that was already completed in 2023.

According to DS Smith, the Romanian organisation was also categorised as a „Customer Innovation Hub“ at the beginning of 2026. According to the company, specialised teams work there on packaging concepts for international brands. The most recently introduced technologies, according to DS Smith, include the 7-colour Flexo HD technology at the Ghimbav site and the introduction of „R-flute“ to the Romanian market.

The company stresses that the investments are part of a broader transformation strategy. The aim is to combine sustainable packaging solutions with higher efficiency and digitised processes.
