87.7% of the aluminium packaging sold each year is recycled. In 2016, this corresponded to 100,500 tonnes. This was the first time that more than 100,000 tonnes of aluminium packaging was recycled. In 2015, the figure was 96,000 tonnes.
The current figures for the recycling of Aluminium packaging recently announced the General Association of Aluminium industry (GDA). The data on the recycling of aluminium packaging was collected by the Gesellschaft für Verpackungsmarktforschung (GVM). Every year, the GVM determines the Utilisation volumes from Packaging waste by the various dual systems. It also works on behalf of the Federal Environment Agency.
Hans-Jürgen Schmidt, Managing Director of Grevenbroich-based Deutsche Aluminium Verpackung Recycling GmbH (DAVR), forecasts further increases in the Aluminium recycling: „The new Packaging law creates stable framework conditions and is already triggering investment in even more modern sorting plants. Aluminium recycling will also continue to benefit from this.“ According to him, the recycling volumes currently achieved reduce the generation of Greenhouse gases by more than 540,000 tonnes of so-called CO2 equivalents per year.
Christian Wellner, Executive Member of the GDA Executive Committee, praises the efforts of his industry in favour of recycling: „A high level of Recycling rate such as aluminium packaging, shows how successful the industry has been in closing the material cycle is.“
