The international alcohol bottler Diageo (including Guinness, Baileys and Smirnoff) has founded a new company in a joint venture. Pulpex Limited aims to become a leading company for sustainable packaging technology. Their first project: the paper-based whisky bottle.

It is set to be the first completely plastic-free spirits bottle made entirely from sustainably sourced wood. Diageo plans to bottle the internationally renowned Johnnie Walker Scotch whisky in it from the beginning of next year.
The bottle is made from sustainably sourced pulp to meet food-safe standards and is said to be 100% recyclable.

"We are proud to have created this world first. We are constantly striving to push the boundaries within sustainable packaging and this bottle has the potential to be truly ground-breaking. It feels fitting that we are launching it with Johnnie Walker, a brand that has often led the way in innovation over its 200 years of existence."

Pepsi and Unilever could follow suit

But it will not stop at spirits. The newly founded Pulpex Limited has brought well-known partners from the consumer goods industry on board. Specifically, Unilever and PepsiCo have been named, with further partners to be announced in the course of the year. The aim of the consortium is for the companies to launch paper bottles based on Pulpex's design and technology for their own brands in the coming year.
