In less than two years, disposable plastic cutlery will be banned throughout the EU. A possible alternative comes from Austria and the Czech Republic. The cardboard spoon has now won the national packaging competition there - as the best food packaging.

The spoon was developed by the Czech company Cardbox together with Greiner Packaging. The idea is as simple as it is convincing. The CBX Spoon is made exclusively from fully recyclable cardboard and is to be established as a promising alternative to plastic spoons.

Environmentally friendly, even with coating

The developers also see it as an environmentally friendly solution when it is printed and coated. As the material used contains no traces of plastic, it is absolutely safe for direct oral and food contact.

As the spoon is easy to fold, it can be attached to the product or even inserted into the yoghurt lid. It is delivered to the customer folded in the centre by machine. This ensures both logistics and product protection, as the risk of damage is minimised when folded.

Initially only for short-term use

The spoon does not currently allow long-term or unlimited use, which is why it falls into the category of classic disposable products for the catering industry with a limited lifespan.
