Borealis and TOMRA have commissioned a pilot plant for mechanical recycling in Lahnstein. It can recycle both film and solid plastic household waste.
And unlike many other recycling plants, the pilot plant will deliver advanced material solutions that are required for plastic applications in numerous sectors, such as consumer goods or automotive applications. With their high degree of purity, low odour, high product stability and slight colour deviations, the Borcycle M recycled polyolefins fulfil the quality criteria of customers along the entire value chain.
„The plant epitomises the principles of the company founded by Borealis. EverMinds-platform that researches innovations in the field of circular plastics. We offer brand owners and converters high-quality recycled material that can be used for the most demanding applications - this is Borealis‘ latest contribution to strengthening the circular plastics economy.“ Lucrèce Foufopoulos, Borealis Executive Vice President Polyolefins, Innovation & Technology and Circular Economy Solutions.
Advanced system for mechanical recycling
The purpose of this demonstration plant is to manufacture products for brand owners and processors and to test and prove their suitability for demanding applications. The successful technical realisation is the basis for an advanced recycling plant on a commercial scale form.
„Having just launched the new circular economy department, it's clear how important waste management and key projects like this are on the road to a sustainable future. The plant is one of the most advanced mechanical recycling facilities for post-consumer polymer waste. It is and will be an important prerequisite for us to further accelerate the transition to a circular economy in the coming years and we are delighted to be part of this pioneering project.“ Volker Rehrmann, Executive Vice President and Head of Circular Economy at TOMRA

The plant is operated jointly by Borealis, TOMRA and Zimmerman. Borealis is responsible for the economic success of the plant and contributes his expertise and extensive knowledge in the areas of innovation, recycling and compounding. TOMRA, a provider of technology-orientated solutions, contributes its in-depth expertise and comprehensive process and market knowledge, which in turn contributes to the circular economy through advanced collection and sorting systems. Zimmerman is a waste disposal company with experience in the separation of various types of waste, including plastics, and is responsible for successful plant operation and product quality.
