Smurfit Kappa Bag-in-Box introduces a new lightweight 60 micron EVOH film for bags that significantly reduces weight and CO2 emissions.
With the introduction of the new lightweight film E Compact 60 the company is taking a further step towards a circular economy and reducing the amount of plastic used to manufacture bags. The development process for this film took more than a year. The result: a film with good mechanical and barrier properties. They are even better than the average requirements of the market, they say.
Bag-in-box: environmentally friendly solution for liquids
This new solution is based on new PE resin technologies that enable more resistant and therefore more sustainable packaging. Thanks to the innovation, a Weight reduction of the bag by 16 per cent and a 12 per cent reduction in CO2 emissions can be achieved (estimated for the 3-litre bag format with the Vitop Compact closure).
„Bag-in-box is an environmentally friendly solution that contains less plastic than other packaging for liquid products. We are constantly working on our materials and technologies to make our packaging as sustainable as possible. Smurfit Kappa Bag-in-Box has already achieved a 15 per cent reduction in film thickness over the last 15 years.“ Thierry Minaud, CEO of Smurfit Kappa Bag-in-Box
The introduction of the Vitop Compact closure was also a Savings of 2.7 tonnes of plastic per one million bags made possible. Thierry Minaud explains: „The material savings go hand in hand with other benefits for the environment: fewer lorries and lower CO2 emissions, less waste, less storage space.“
