Mondi tests sortability of mono-material bags

Mondi and the National Test Centre Circular Plastics in the Netherlands have tested the sortability of Mondi's mono-material bags.

Mondi has teamed up with the National Test Centre Circular Plastics (NTCP) in the Netherlands to test the sortability of its mono-material bags. The tests on the polypropylene bags were carried out under realistic conditions and confirm that the sortability into the appropriate waste stream.

In a series of tests Mondi prove that its mono-material polypropylene (PP) bags and roll material can be sorted into the appropriate waste streams. These tests, carried out in collaboration with the National Test Centre Circular Plastics (NTCP) in the Netherlands, which Simulate realistic conditions for packaging waste disposalwere developed to optimise the Determine the sortability of recyclable mono-PP packaging. Using state-of-the-art technical equipment, the tests were carried out on prefabricated retort and standard bags, injection-moulded bags, top films and thermoformed semi-rigid tray materials.

The tests prove that the top film and the thermoformed semi-rigid trays are successfully sorted into the correct subgroup. In addition, the prefabricated bags and set the standard for sorting flows.which still need to be developed throughout Europe to support high-quality input for plastics recycling processes.

"In order to achieve the plastic recycling targets defined in the revised PPWD, sorting and recycling of plastic waste must be significantly improved. As the market leader, we are determined to contribute to this goal by testing the sorting performance of our packaging and demonstrating that it is recognised and allocated to the correct sorting stream in state-of-the-art waste management facilities. We are particularly proud that we have also succeeded in challenging applications such as wet food retort pouches."

The tests are part of the company's MAP2030 sustainability commitments to provide circular solutions with innovative packaging and paper solutions, Keeping materials in circulation and avoiding waste. The company has committed to making all its packaging and paper solutions reusable, recyclable or compostable by 2025 and is working closely with cross-value chain collaborations such as CEFLEX and 4evergreen to eliminate unsustainable packaging and develop harmonised designs for recycling or circularity policies.

"We conduct independent tests and experiments to help close the plastic loop. By replicating real-life situations for Mondi, we were able to thoroughly assess the sortability of the packaging products. We were able to prove that the top film and tray combinations can be recognised in different sorting streams, and Mondi's stand-up pouches support sorting strategies that need to be developed and implemented on a larger scale."
