The German recycling specialist Interzero and the US raw materials company Eastman announced an agreement on 22 September to supply an Eastman molecular recycling plant in Normandy. Interzero will supply up to 20,000 tonnes of difficult-to-recycle PET household packaging waste per year.

Eastman's planned molecular recycling plant in France will be the world's largest "material-to-material" molecular recycling plant. Once completed, the plant will recycle around 160,000 tonnes of hard-to-recycle polyester waste every year. The project is scheduled to go into operation in 2025.

"Eastman is a leader in the molecular recycling of polyesters and has decades of experience in innovation. Combining the strengths and leading expertise of Eastman and Interzero is the next step for us to close loops and thus realising our vision of a world without waste," said Jacco de Haas, Chief Commercial Officer at Interzero Plastics Recycling.

Chemical recycling is a necessary addition to material recycling in order to keep more raw materials in the cycle. Once completed, the Eastman plant in France will process coloured and opaque PET waste that cannot be mechanically recycled into clear and transparent rPET.
