Together with Tagaddod, SIG is launching a project in Egypt to recycle used beverage cartons. With „Recycle for Good“, households and the catering industry can use a mobile app to arrange the collection of beverage cartons and collect rewards.
Starts in Egypt SIG now „Recycle for Good“, a new recycling initiative that makes it possible, to collect used beverage cartons directly from households and the catering trade with the help of technological solutions. This joint initiative with Tagaddod is the first of its kind on the Egyptian market. Consumers can use a mobile app to arrange for used beverage cartons to be collected from their homes or workplaces and receive rewards for doing so. The aim of the project is to incentivise the recycling of used beverage cartons, to ensure that high-quality material resources remain in circulation while helping local communities.
Tagaddod will be in charge of collecting the cardboard packaging. It is the first company in Egypt to offer direct collection of waste from households and the food industry with the help of technology-based solutions. The app enables consumers and companies in the food industry to have used beverage cartons collected in return for a premium. The initiative utilises the existing logistics network of Tagaddod and the Green Pan brand to collect the beverage cartons.
„Changing behaviour is crucial to achieving lasting positive change for the environment. ‚Recycle for Good‘ aims to change people's attitudes by showing them the added value of recycling. We are proud to be working with Tagaddod on this initiative. The first initiative of its kind in Egypt is an important milestone for the country in its endeavour to make a greater contribution to a circular economy.“
DisplayAbdelghany Eladib, President & General Manager Middle East and Africa at SIG
Recycling beverage cartons keeps high-quality materials in circulation for longer. All materials used to manufacture SIG carton packs - raw cartonboard, aluminium and polyethylene - can be recycled as valuable resources and used to manufacture new products. Currently, only around 60 per cent of waste generated in Egypt each year is collected, and less than 20 per cent of these are properly disposed of or recycled. As there is no waste separation at household level, there is a huge need for collection initiatives like this one.
„We are delighted to be working with SIG on the ‚Recycle for Good‘ initiative. For Tagaddod, this is a breakthrough in realising our vision using our technology and resources. Tagaddod has the infrastructure, the network and the vision to enable and accelerate the transition to a circular economy in Egypt. With this initiative, we will expand our activities to collect valuable cardboard packaging, put the valued material components back into circulation and at the same time secure a reliable additional income for households and waste collectors. This has a long-term positive impact and means value creation at the highest level.“
Nour El Assal, CEO and co-founder of Tagaddod
