Those who order their food from the German delivery service Lieferando may soon receive it in a new biodegradable packaging with an algae coating. It was developed by Lieferando’s parent company Just Eat Takeaway.com together with the British start-up Notpla.
The future of sustainable packaging
Lieferando has already banned single-use plastic from its web shop since 2019 and offers its restaurant partners recyclable alternatives for different dishes.
“We are determined to build a more sustainable future for restaurant food packaging. Reusable systems and the Lieferando Eco kraft paper boxes are part of this strategy. It offers all the benefits of traditional plastic packaging – and saves valuable resources. We have been supporting Notpla in their development since 2018 and are currently working on further solutions,” says Robin Clark, Senior Director Global Partnerships & Sustainability about Just Eat Takeaway.com’s partnership and CSR strategy.

Lieferando’s webshop offers a variety of recyclable and sustainable alternatives to traditional wholesale packaging. To this end, Just Eat Takeaway.com has developed a strict packaging policy that ensures a low environmental impact, even beyond the legal requirements. Deliveryando’s own packaging is all made from recyclable paper.
The new eco kraft paper boxes are available in 700ml and 1300ml fill sizes.
