Messe Düsseldorf is putting materials centre stage at interpack 2026. Under the hot topic of „Innovative Materials“, the leading trade fair will present more than 1,000 exhibitors from the fields of packaging solutions, packaging materials and packaging materials in Düsseldorf from 7 to 13 May, bringing together the entire spectrum of current material developments.

The focus is on new material technologies which, according to the organisers, are intended to improve durability, product protection and recyclability. A total of around 2,800 exhibitors are expected. Thomas Dohse, Director of interpack, emphasises: „The variety of materials and their applications at interpack is unique in the world,“ and points out that the strategic focus of „Innovative Materials“ is specifically on the packaging materials sector.

Plastics remain dominant - focus on sustainability

Flexible and rigid plastic packaging continue to account for the largest share of the global market for consumer goods packaging with a combined 65 per cent. This segment is correspondingly well represented at the trade fair, with bio-based films, mono-material PP solutions and material-reduced variants, among others. Ambra Stocco from Taghleef Industries explains: „These include bio-based and recycled solutions for flexible packaging and labels. Mono-material PP films and material-reduced variants emphasise our focus on recyclability and reduced material usage.“

Industrial plastic solutions and logistics packaging will also be present. Veit Enders from Schütz describes the focus: „Our interpack presence in 2026 will concentrate on intelligent packaging concepts that optimally combine economic efficiency with ecological sustainability. With our product and service innovations, we offer customers worldwide forward-looking solutions to make their logistics processes even safer and more resource-efficient.“

Paper, metal and glass with growth prospects

Paper and cardboard packaging has a global market share of around 16 per cent for consumer goods, and further growth is expected in the coming years. In Hall 8a, manufacturers will be presenting their solutions for cardboard, corrugated board and packaging printing. Coating and labelling solutions are also part of the range.

Metal packaging, in particular cans and can manufacturing systems, currently hold a market share of 12 per cent with forecast growth. Ruedi Umbricht, COO of Soudronic AG, explains: „The demand for complete canning lines is increasing, particularly in the pet food sector,“ and points to sustainability requirements and carbon footprints as drivers.

Glass packaging accounted for eight per cent of the retail market share in 2024 and is also set to increase further. The range will be complemented by alternative and bio-based materials, which will be presented in Hall 9 in particular.
