Old PET bottles, fishing nets and plastic waste: this is what the new „green“ sports line, which will be available exclusively at Kaufland from 2 January 2020, is made of. The polyester contained in the clothing is made from recycled plastic.
„We already use GOTS-certified raw materials in organic quality for our cotton textiles whenever possible. It is therefore only logical that we are also sustainable when it comes to synthetic fibre textiles,“ says Johannes Mahrholdt, Managing Director Purchasing Non Food International. „The quality of sportswear made from recycled plastic is no different to conventional goods.“
Clothing is produced using innovative technology
For the production of a sports shirt, plastic from, for example approx. 12 PET bottles required. In a modern process, these Cleaned and shredded. The flakes are melted down and spun into threads. The interwoven threads form the Recycled polyester material, from which the shirt can be sewn.
The reuse of plastic waste has a number of advantages. When plastic waste is converted into sportswear No crude oil consumed. The Energy consumption in the production process compared to the production of a new shirt is by half and CO2 emissions are also lower. Kaufland has set itself the goal of Proportion of recycled materials in clothing and shoes made from synthetic fibres in the coming years.
Sports line is part of REset Plastic
Kaufland is part of REset Plastic, the Schwarz Group's plastics strategy. The holistic approach ranges from prevention, design, recycling and disposal to innovation and education. In this way, the Use of plastic reduced and cycles are closed.
