Südzucker relies on Koehler barrier paper for sugar sticks

In the coming years, Südzucker will switch all packaging to solutions that are 100 per cent recyclable. The packaging material for the sugar sticks has now been switched to Koehler NexPlus Seal paper.

Over the next few years, Südzucker will be switching all the packaging it uses to solutions that are 100 per cent recyclable. The company has now switched to Koehler NexPlus Seal paper for the packaging material of its sugar sticks.

Koehler NexPlus papers are characterised by a barrier coating with various functionalities. In particular, these are barriers for aromas, grease, oil, water vapour or gases, which are combined with the paper's own functionalities, such as high strength properties and a natural feel, to create a strong overall concept. The paper offers what is important for packaging: protection of the contents, protection of the environment and excellent processing properties.

The goal: 100 per cent recyclability

As part of an extensive sustainability project, all packaging used is to be converted to solutions that are 100 per cent recyclable in the coming years.

„At the beginning, we worked with Koehler to define what function the packaging actually has to fulfil. Food packaging often fulfils more than the actual necessary task.“ Tillmann Dörr, Head of Food Technology in the Research, Development and Service division at Südzucker

Sample cuts of the Koehler NexPlus were subjected to various stress tests at Südzucker in order to test the general product promise. This was followed by qualification tests on the existing packaging lines. „Our aim was to ensure that the new paper could be used on our existing packaging machines while maintaining the same throughput time and efficiency. With Koehler NexPlus Seal 45 g/m², we have found the optimum solution,“ says Tillmann Dörr.

Koehler barrier papers as a sustainable packaging solution

Koehler NexPlus barrier papers are made from renewable raw materials and can be fed 100 per cent into the recycling loop, which works for paper in many countries worldwide and is accepted by consumers.

„In our view, the future belongs to barrier papers. Paper is increasingly taking on functionalities that only plastic could offer in the past. And in contrast, paper fulfils a completely sustainable life cycle.“ Eckhard Kallies, Head of the Flexible Packaging Paper Division at Koehler

The life cycle analysis of flexible packaging paper from Koehler shows a significant CO2 Savings. The use of Koehler NexPlus for Südzucker sugar sticks has the further advantage that material with a lower grammage is used than with the previous solution.
