UPM Specialty Papers, together with Henkel and Koenig & Bauer, has developed a sustainable heat-sealable packaging concept that combines improved barrier properties with suitability for all printing processes, including digital printing, is recyclable in existing fibre recycling streams and is safe for food contact.
The project began with UPM Asendo barrier paper, which was tested and optimised on a Koenig & Bauer RotaJET digital press. In contrast to flexo, gravure or offset printing processes, which require long print runs, digital printing technology Small batches for special marketing purposes, such as events or localised packaging.
The packaging prototype was then coated with Henkel's Aquence Epix BC 6134 FL lacquer. The resulting structure is not only Resistant to moisture and especially grease, but also has excellent sealing properties. This makes them ideal for applications such as confectionery, frozen food and baked goods.
„The smooth collaboration between UPM, Koenig & Bauer Digital & Webfed and Henkel ensures that the project runs efficiently and effectively, utilising the strengths of each party and showcasing the latest advances in digital printing and sustainable packaging solutions. The materials used in the doypack bags are designed to work seamlessly in different processes to ensure high runnability and consistent quality.“
Aleksi Pekkanen, Senior Researcher, UPM R&D

The entire production process, from coating and printing to the packaging of the sweets, went efficiently and according to plan. „We have already used UPM paper in our packaging line several times. Now that we have learnt to use heat-sealable barrier papers, it works in the same way as other commercial materials. The packaging machines are designed for plastic, abut we can already achieve the same running speeds with UPM barrier papers. Paper also handles better than plastic and reduces waste as plastic stretches. Paper offers a higher degree of dimensional stability,“ says Jaana Hakkarainen, Director, Sales and Production, Pack Company.
UPM Asendo, UPM Asendo Pro, UPM Solide Lucent and UPM Prego barrier and barrier base papers are perfect for further coatings to improve the protective properties and to enhance the colour and colour stability. for additional heat or cold sealing. Together with the partner coatings, these papers can offer medium to high barrier levels depending on the requirements of the end application.
