The packaging industry is facing economic and regulatory challenges. Sick is presenting solutions at interpack 2026 that increase efficiency and process safety.
The packaging industry in Germany is facing significant challenges. A weak economic climate, volatile material and energy costs, and pressure from the EU Packaging Regulation are burdening the sector. At interpack 2026, Sick will present solutions that increase efficiency and process reliability throughout the entire value chain.
Intelligent sensor solutions
Sick offers a broad portfolio of sensor and automation solutions. This includes sensors for quality control and material efficiency, which enable seamless traceability. The SIG300 IO-Link master plays a central role in this, by capturing, pre-processing, and forwarding sensor data to IT systems. This integration is crucial for transparent and flexible packaging processes.
Image processing and AI
In the field of image processing quality control, Sick relies on AI technology. The AI Blob Finder is capable of precisely detecting and analysing objects. Using neural networks, objects are identified and separated from each other pixel by pixel, which is particularly advantageous when objects overlap.
Challenges in Object Recognition
Sick's W12 LED NextGen light curtains are ideal for complex detection tasks in packaging machines. They reliably detect transparent, flat or uneven objects and are equipped with IO-Link, enabling easy integration into existing systems. Luminescence sensors such as LUTS/LUTX are also part of the product range and ensure the detection of invisible markings on packaging.
The future of product labelling
Another focus is the transition from 1D to 2D barcodes as part of the GS1 Sunrise 2027 initiative. Sick offers solutions for the identification of 2D codes, which can provide more information than traditional barcodes. This transition requires adjustments throughout the entire supply chain, from packaging machine manufacturers to logistics partners.
