The deposit system for beverage bottles has been famous for a long time, and at the beginning of the year, the deposit obligation was even extended. But companies are also increasingly thinking about how to create more reusable systems for other products and packaging. In 2021, Sea Me GmbH began to set up a cycle in which the packaging of its own products such as soaps and lotions can be returned, cleaned and refilled. To this end, the company launched zerooo.

In the meantime, the packaging of Sea Me products can be handed in at over 900 shops in Germany and Austria, andthe company is looking for more partners. The goal is to achieve zero waste throughout the entire value chain.

The reusable system for drugstores not only has a positive impact on the environment and the climate, but also brings benefits for retailers and consumers. The more trading partners which participate in the system, the more ecological the return and transport of the packaging becomes. The distances become shorter, which reduces emissions, and recycling methods such as incineration are not the last stop in the life cycle of the packaging.

Circular economy through reuse

Currently, zerooo’s partners include Müller, Edeka and Rewe, as well as other drugstores, food retailers, unpackaged shops and concept shops. The company is not alone in believing in the advantages of a reusable system for drugstores. Environmental organisations such as WWF or Deutsche Umwelthilfe see the reusable concept as an opportunity to close resource cycles. Particularly important for zerooo on the way to a circular value chain are running washing lines, reprocessing or further processing of the closures and returning the labels to the waste paper stream.
